Messenger of the Lord: The Prophetic Ministry of Ellen G. White
Encyclopedic is the best word to describe Herbert E. Douglass’s recently released study of Ellen White. Even though Mrs. White (1827- 1915) was the most influential Seventh-day Adventist in the history of the denomination, there have been only two books that comprehensively deal with her ministry and writings. The first of those volumes was T. Housel Jemison’s A Prophet Among You, which came off the press in 1955. For many years Jemison’s work served as a textbook for college courses dealing with the gift of prophecy. But the 43 years since its publication have wit-nessed an immense amount of research and writing on the topic.
Consequently, the Ellen G. White Estate trustees felt the need for a book that would not only present the basic facts of Ellen White’s ministry, but also deal with new issues and research that need to be included in any study on a subject. Thus in 1989 the board of trustees, in conjunction with the General Conference Department of Education and the Board of Higher Education, authorized the production of a comprehensive reference work. Herbert E. Douglass was selected to be the author.
Douglass was well prepared for the task. He had served in the church as a college president, professor of religion, book editor, and associate editor of the Adventist Review. He had also taught college-level courses on the gift of prophecy and had been an avid life-long student of Ellen White.
The result of his labor is a book of monumental proportions (more than 600 large double-columned pages, with probably three or four times the num-ber of words as its predecessor). There is no single volume in the history of Ellen White studies that covers such a vast array of topics.
Messenger of the Lord is not only massive; it also reflects a broad range of knowledge of the literature related to Ellen White and her work. The foot-notes provide a gold mine of sources for those who have an interest in exploring the various subtopics cov-ered in the book.
Douglass has divided the book into eight sections and 47 chapters. He entitles section one “God’s Com-munication System.” The focal point is a general discussion of God’s use of prophets in the Bible.
The second section provides a bio-graphical overview and introduces many of Ellen White’s personal charac-teristics. Section three treats her prophetic ministry, while the fourth section shows her as the prophetic voice of Adventism within the context of the denomination’s history. Section five centers on several of Ellen White’s major contributions to the church in such areas as health, edu-cation, and publishing. Section six, one of the most important, treats principles of interpretation and provides insights into the production of her writings.
The seventh section evaluates the criticisms of Ellen White and her work. The last section (eight) covers in three chapters the “continuing relevancy of God’s messenger” for the Adventist Church and its members. Then there are the 16 appendices, which provide a range of specialized topics all the way from discussing Ellen White’s growth in understanding of her visions to a complete copy of her last will and testament.
Douglass has written an encyclopedic work. Both church members and those finding their orientation outside of Adventism will find the book useful and informative. While some people will read it all the way through, it is probable that more readers will use it as a reference volume.
While readers may not agree with every one of the author’s interpretations, it is safe to say that all will be enriched by reading and studying his work. Messenger of the Lord is one of those books that should be on the shelves of every person interested in Adventism and/or Ellen White and her ministry.
