History Of Urban Form: Before the Industrial Revolutions
Now in its second, expanded edition this book presents a fully international history of
the development of city form - planned and unplanned-from the first ancient cities
through to the dawn of the Industrial Revolutions in Europe (occurring as they did at
varying dates) and to the Civil War of 1861 in the USA. The Far East, India and the
civilisations of Central and South America (which lie outside the mainstream of
Mediterranean and European based development) are dealt with in a series of appercice
The prime concern has been to show the physical results of 5000 years of urban
activity, using detail drawings, contemporary maps and photographs (including aerial
views) to relate examples of detail design to their contemporary urban context. At the
same time these developments are considered against their contemporary social, economic
and political backgrounds to show how these helped to determine the physical form of
towns and cities,
This new edition includes a major set of new city case studies, both for Europe and the
USA, and many of these are illustrated with nineteenth-cen tury maps which give a wealth
of contemporary detail
Two new sections deal with systems of artillery fortifications in England - a topic
largely overlooked - and with early American railroad towns, illustrated with
contemporary nineteenth century photographs.
The book is intended for all students of urban history - not only those prepaion or a
professional career in town planning or related occupations, but also those people, in
many walks of life, who are becoming increasingly aware of the part well-informed citizens
can play in shaping their own environment. For professionals and lay men alike, an under-
standing of the forces that have shaped the past in particular the 'politics of planning' is
essential for a real comprehension of mankind's present-day urban dilemma.
