Acid Rain: The Devastating Impact On North America
This is a study of the catastrophe of acid rain: where it
comes from, how it is formed, and what its effects are on
land, water, air, vegetation, animals, and thus on people
food, and industry
Concentrating on North America, the authors describe in
detail the physical phenomenon and its origins, takingeir
evidence from scientific studies. They paint a shocking
picture of hundreds of beautiful, sparkling, remote, dead
lakes, countryside from which fish and birds havee vanished,
waters in which small forms of life are dwarfed and
deformed, exhausted soil producing slow growth and
damaged plants, buildings being eaten away, corroded
pipes, toxic household water. The immense costs to health
and to such, industries as logging, fishing, tourisn, and
farming are càrefully tabulated.
The authors trace acid rain to its sources in industrial
and traffic emission of pollutants-often long distances from
where the rain falls-and discuss the official evasions and
corporate obstructiveness that have continued to produce
this state of affairs. They show that the dangers have been
public knowledge since 1971, when the leading Canadian
expert on acid rain published his first findings and when the
Swedish government published a detailed report on acid
rain and remarked that the effects Sweden was suffering
were likely to be duplicated on a much larger scale in North
America.
In North America, the problem is complicated by an
exchange of acid rain between the United States and
Canada, in which both countries are culpable: the wind blows
in both directions, but each country points at the other.
Acid Rain is a sober, authoritative, well-documented
carefully analytical study of our most severe environme OD
problem. It concludes that without immediate and stro REGIS
action in both the United States and Canada, "the long-
BOOK
forecast is an epitaph for the unprotected environment
North America."
